Core Values: Meaningful Relationships

Each of Living Stone's Values serves as a filter through which we evaluate everything. This is one of five posts which will briefly explain each of the values which undergird everything we do.

Meaningful Relationships

Did you know that a baby inside the womb of its mother can recognize faces and differentiate faces from random shapes? Isn't it bizarre that one of the absolute worst forms of punishment for a human is to leave them alone in solitary confinement? Why is it that dying people wish to be with their family and friends?

Humans are created for relationship.

We reflect God's nature in that way, because the Bible teaches us that he is three persons in one God. He has always been, and always will be, in relationship. We, as his creation, are meant to be in relationship.

The offer of relationship is one of the most important aspects of a local church.

Again, everyone needs relationships with other people. The church meets a a basic human need by connecting people together.

Relationships in the church are not based on you. This is really important, because most of life is lived in conditional relationships, where we have to do something in order to be accepted. The church, on the other hand, is defined by what Jesus did. We are connected to one another by Jesus, not our works. Are you socially awkward? You are welcomed into the church because Jesus welcomed you into his family. Are you loud, brash, and overbearing? You are welcomed into the church because Jesus welcomed you into his family. Are you broken, hurting, and a bit more unstable than you want others to know? You are welcomed into the church because Jesus welcomed you into his family. Whoever you are, the church welcomes you because Jesus welcomes you. Your relationships in the church are based on Jesus.

Relationships in the church are formed on and around a mission. Everything has to have a purpose. Anything without a purpose is destined for the trash can. Relationships are the same way. Without a purpose to gather around, you and your friends will stop gathering, and soon you stop being friends. The church gives people a purpose. The church exists to help all people everywhere love God. That is a big purpose that will keep people connected for a long time.

At Living Stone, we want everything we do to start and end with the growth and deepening of relationships.
